Never Had to Knock on Wood Lyrics

Because I've gotten a lot of searches on this song, I'll post the lyrics here. Technically the song's title is "The Impression that I Get." Since one searcher was looking for information on the song's meaning, I'll give him my take on it. The singer is glad that he has never had times in life when his character has really been put to the test but he knows it's just a matter of time before he's faced with such a situation and he's not sure what the outcome will be.

Have you ever been close to tragedy
Or been close to folks who have
Have you ever felt a pain so powerful
So heavy you collapse? No, well

I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
that's the impression that I get

have you ever had the odds stacked up so high?
You need a strength most don't possess
Or has it ever come down to do or die?
You've got to rise above the rest. No, well...

I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
that's the impression that I get

I'm not a coward,
I've just never been tested
I'd like to think that if I was,
I would pass
Look at the tested and think there but for the grace go
I might be a coward,
I'm afraid of what I might find out.

I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
It makes me wonder if
I've never had to knock on wood
And I'm glad I haven't yet
Because I'm sure it isn't good
That's the impression that I get

Now go enjoy some good brassy ska punk or swing music.

I've asked the above comment to be reposted on my politcal blog. As a matter of policy I do not accept advertising on this blog unless it amuses me.

On the other hand, I feel like an ass for doing so and as it dealt with a privacy issue it was important.

I love that song ! it makes me want to run around naked with a meat cleaver. The first time i heard it, i was jerking off and havn't been the same since. I've found true meanng in the passage of sanctimonious grandure and feel the obtuce a part of my soulful need for resonnance.

Does the phrase "I've never had to knock on wood" mean anything special? I'm from Sweden and hasn't heard that expression before.

Great song though!
